Blending sporting looks and high performance with superb off-road capabilities, the GLC is a premium SUV which is hard to beat in terms of road presence, driving enjoyment or interior comforts.
A length of 4656mm and height of 1639 ensures that the GLC is a domineering presence on the road. Its assertive profile is further strengthened by the wide apron, large air intakes and the thick chrome bars of the grille – not to mention 17”, 18” or 19” alloy wheels and the skid plate that provides underbody protection when mounting very steep gradients. On rough and rocky ground, the GLC’s maximum approach angle of 19.9 degrees stands it in good stead, whilst a maximum wading depth of 300mm allows it to negotiate deep puddles and rural fords with ease.
A lengthy 2873mm wheelbase gives front and rear passengers (even large adults) ample legroom, along with the ability to carry a large amount of belongings and provisions. The 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats allow you to extend the 550 litres of loadspace to a potential 1600 litres. Artico leather upholstery is standard to both SE and Sport specifications, as well as comfortable and adjustable seats that provide an excellent driving position and the lumbar support essential for maintaining comfort on longer journeys.
Despite its imposing frame, the GLC weighs a relatively modest 1845kg. Together with the choice of effective and powerful 2.2 litre diesel engines, this ensures impressive performance and manoeuvrability. Available in 170hp and 204hp variants, both units offer more than enough torque to tackle any on-road or off-road challenge. The more powerful edition enables you to achieve 0-62mph acceleration in just 7.6 seconds, in addition to a theoretical top speed of 138mph.
This considerable power is allocated through a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission, the precise engineering of which means that you can always enjoy instant response when you press the accelerator. Ride quality is another of the GLC’s strong points, thanks to a multi-link suspension offering three different driving modes (Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual).
The GLC protects its driver and passenger with a multitude of sophisticated traction control systems and driver-assistance technology – and, of course, with its strong, rigid frame and multiple airbags. The Electronic Stability Programme is comprised of a number of different mechanisms to ensure that the driver keeps control in all situations. These include the new Crosswind Assist function which (as the name suggests) counteracts the effects of high winds. Collision Prevention Assist, meanwhile, engages the brake pedal automatically if the system senses a collision with another vehicle is imminent, preventing low-speed shunts (or at least mitigating the damage done).
Given the premium quality of the GLC’s bodywork, interior and engineering, it is little surprise that an array of advanced technology is standard. All versions of the GLC are equipped with reversing cameras, privacy glass, a powered tailgate, and rain-sensing windscreen wipers. A range of infotainment functions can be accessed through the 7” colour display. The Sport trim level includes a Garmin Map Pilot navigation system, heated seats, and an LED Intelligent Light System with cornering lights and Adaptive Highbeam Assist.
